About teaching...
Learning English as a second language consists of enabling students of speaking with people who speak English in Québec, in
Canada and around the world. It also gives them access to the wealth of
information and entertainment available in the English media magazines, radio,
television, as well as information and communications technologies
(ICT) (MELS English Core Program, 2004)
During my two years in university, I have been able to develop my personal opinion on how teaching a second language should take place in Québec. The statement above corresponds to the main goal of Quebec's Education English Program. I have to say that I strongly believe that with the appropriate resources, it is possible for students to be able to function in English by the end of their secondary level. To do so, the three competencies need to be developed using authentic material. Indeed, since we want out students to be able to communicate with native speakers of English, it is important to put them into situations that are similar to reality.
Before the course Nouvelles technologies et enseignement des langues, I was unsure of the relevance of using information and communication technologies in second language learning. However, I realized that the use of electronic activities such as blogs or wikis could be beneficial for both the student and the teacher. Second language learners from Quebec grew up using the various technological tools around them and it is only logical that we use them in education. By using ICTs, students will feel more motivated and have a certain amount of control over their learning, which is very important nowdays.
Finally, there are so many possibilities for teaching English as a Second Language. It is our job as future teachers to explore the different avenues and stay up to date on the latest teaching trends in order to offer the best support possible to our students.
