Learning and Evaluation Situations
Learning and evaluation situations consist in a series of task that aim at developing all three competencies listed in the Quebec Education Program. To do so, students are put in contexts that are related to daily life experiences. Most of time, LESs are performed in teams, where peer interaction is beneficial for developing oral interaction skills and at the same time cooperation skills.
During my two years in the bachelor's degree, I have been asked to create different learning and evaluations for both secondary and elementary levels. The first LES that I ever created was called "Accepting Differences". The audience for this lesson plan was elementary students from the end of cycle three. It was based on the story of a young boy named Ling Lee, who had trouble integrating into his new school after immigrating from China to Canada. Throughout the various activities, students had to engage in different tasks that would develop C1,C2 and C3.
The second learning and evaluation situation that I had to design was for secondary school students. In this case, the targetted audience was secondary four students. The theme of our LES was pollution. Since environment is a subject that is more important than ever, the team decided to create various tasks that would broaden students' knowledge of environmental issues. They would also develop all three competencies through the different assigned tasks.
During my practicum at the secondary level, I had to create a shortened version of an learning and evaluation situation. Given the short amount of time allowed for us to teach, my associate teacher had asked me to prepare an LES that I would present to every group but in one period only. Since the upcoming holiday was Halloween, I decided to use this day as the main theme of the LES. My associate teacher taught to secondary four students, meaning that I had to choose something that would be very actual and motivating for them. I based my lesson plan on Michael Jackson's Thriller. Overall, students responded really well to the tasks and I was very prooud of the work I had done.
